12th Kandy’s Battle of the Gold’s, one day game between Wariyapola Sri Sumangala (St. Paul’s) College and Sri Rahula College, which was expected to be played on April 22 at the Asgiriya Stadium has been postponed.
The home team of this game asked for a postponement. Both schools are packed with good fielders, batsmen and bowlers and are sure to give a good display of cricket. Sri Sumangala College is led by Banuka Dissanayke a good wicket keeper and also good in batting, the vice captain Movidu Balasuriya a good left arm spinner.
Sri Rahula College side is led by a top cricketer Vishal Gardiwasam a good bowler with many wickets and the vice captain Kavya Punchihewa a good batsman and the rest are to give their best. The big match was played on 8th and 9th at the Pallekele Cricket Stadium which ended in a draw with Sri Rahula College cricketers taking the upper hand of the game.
New officials at Nuwra Eliya Golf Club
Nuwra Eliya Golf Club has elected their new committee with a top class golfer who has done a lot for the game Sudath Kumara comes in as the President, the 135th AGM took place at the club house on April 6. Former Sri Lanka Tennis Association, President and National Olympic Committee (NOC) Chairman Suresh Subramaniam will be the new Vice President. Secretary is Brig. Nanda Hathurusinghe a hard worker and the committee is formed with top supporters like- Austin Bertholomeusz, Rev Joshua, Saliya Jayaweera, Surain Prematilake, Thivanka Ekarathn, Air Marshal H. Abeywickrama and Ananda Jayasekara.
According to the secretary, the last two names are the captain and vice captain of the club team.
This club is one of the oldest Golf Clubs in Sri Lanka. Established in the late 19th century. It is an 18-hole golf course.
The Nuwara Eliya golf course was constructed in 1889 by a Scottish soldier of the Gordon Highlanders for the British servicemen and officials who were posted at Nuwara Eliya.
The course opened in 1890 with nine holes and was upgraded and expanded to eighteen holes in 1893. In 1892 a golf pavilion, consisting of five rooms, was constructed, overlooking the links.
Trinity to give a good hand for Iron sports
Trinity College, a school which gives the best for sports are keen to give the best for weightlifting. Weightlifting started at this school in 2005.
From that year the school has grown immensely, many of the lifters of this school have performed well both at school, district and national level. Though this iron sport does not have a long history, the weightlifters have performed tremendously since the start.
