Seven hundred and seventy nine prisoners granted Presidential amnesty for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, will be released on April 13.
This special amnesty is granted under the powers vested in President Ranil Wickremesinghe by Article 34 (1) of the Constitution. Among those released, 11 are women.
This time, the largest number of prisoners, 210, have been released from Pallekele Prison. Additionally, 91 prisoners from Weerawila Prison, 88 from Taldena Prison, 56 from Mahara Prison, 43 from Ambepussa Prison, and 30 from Anuradhapura Prison have been released. Prisoners have been released from 29 prisons.
Prisoners who have completed half or more of the sentence period will have one week per year deducted from their sentence. These prisoners must spend the remaining balance of their rehabilitation period under the supervision of a community corrections officer, in accordance with Act No. 46 of 1999.
