The United National Party (UNP) has unveiled plans to compensate members who have suffered political victimisation due to past injustices.

UNP General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara said that compensation would be disbursed starting from May, prioritising those who endured substantial financial setbacks after 1994. Following the appointment of the Committee to Investigate Political Victimisation by UNP leader and President Ranil Wickremesinghe, a thorough examination of 164 complaints was undertaken. Of these, 66 cases were identified as having incurred losses exceeding Rs.1 million, prompting the approval of compensation.

President Wickremesinghe has directed the extension of the Political Victimisation Committee’s tenure by an additional two months. This extension will accommodate appeals lodged by those whose cases are under review and ensure that all grievances are thoroughly considered. The UNP will gather more views from its regional organisers to supplement the committee’s deliberations. This collaborative effort seeks to ensure a fair and comprehensive assessment of all appeals.

The UNP aims to address instances of political victimisation with diligence and fairness. When the review concludes, compensation will be disbursed to deserving persons in keeping with the established criteria.
