The Sri Lankan Embassy in Bahrain celebrated International Women’s Day in collaboration with the Sri Lankan community organizations in Bahrain on March 8.
Sri Lankan Ambassador in Bahrain H.M.G.R.R.K. Wijeratne Mendis extended her felicitations and best wishes to all participants, and read out the International Women’s Day Message of the President of Sri Lanka.
During her remarks, the Ambassador emphasised the importance of the occasion for women around the world and appreciated the contributions made by the Sri Lankan female migrant workers in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Middle East towards Sri Lanka’s economic and social development.
The Embassy also screened the International Women’s Day special video clip published by the Foreign Ministry which included the messages of Foreign Minister Ali Sabry, State Foreign Minster Tharaka Balasuriya and Foreign Secretary Aruni Wijewardane.
The Embassy awarded certificates of appreciation to the Sinhala school teachers of the Sri Lankan Club who have been serving children of the Sri Lankan community in Bahrain for more than a decade.
Meera Alwis of the Sri Lankan Women’s Association delivered a speech on the relevance of International Women’s Day in Tamil. Among other activities to celebrate Women’s Day were two speeches by Dr. Fathima Nasmy and Rinossa Shahbdeen on medical emergencies and women’s mental health.
Parallel to the event, a product exhibition was organized by the Embassy with the participation of the female members of the Sri Lankan associations in Bahrain, where their paintings, handicrafts, food and sweets were displayed. The event ended with a colourful cultural performance by the Sri Lankan community.
