Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha said that Provincial Schools and National Schools will enter into one category in future without any disparity as provincial or national.
Accordingly, a plan will be implemented to make national schools and provincial schools into one school type. The Minister said that the implementation of this plan is being discussed in the sectoral monitoring committee and although it is not possible to implement it at once, it will be implemented step by step.
This proposal to merge these two school categories has been presented by the education reform policy framework.
There have been identified several issues since there are two school categories in the country, especially when teacher transfers and distribution of resources.
Speaking on teacher education the minister said that the knowledge of teachers should be updated in line with the modern advancement of the ever advancing world. Under this it is essential to use technology for updating and upgrading teachers’ knowledge and that technology should be used for education reforms also.
The minister added that after teaching a certain subject unit in the classroom, a system should be developed to give exercises to students related to that subject and give them marks. The same system is practiced in many countries, he said.
He emphasized that the national education policy should change with time and it should not change even though the education minister has changed.
