The Central Intelligence Unit team has seized drugs worth Rs 71 crore bound for Sri Lanka from a village in Tamil Nadu’s Pudukkottai district.
Drugs worth Rs 71 crore bound for Sri Lanka were seized from a village in Tamil Nadu’s Pudukkottai district. The narcotics were to be smuggled into the island nation via the Thondi sea route.
The drugs were seized by a Central Intelligence Unit from Tiruchirappalli at a prawn farm in Mimisal village.
Based on a tip off, the team reached the spot and seized the drugs, which included 70 kg of ganja oil and 950 kg of ganja.
The team was monitoring movement of boats from Thondi, SP Pattinam, Devipattinam, Maraikayarpatthinam, Vedhalai, Thangachimadam, Mandapam and Pamban to Sri Lanka to illegally smuggle ganja, sea cucumber, turmeric and seahorses when they got the tip off.
On Sunday night, the team searched prawn farms from SP Pattinam to Ennamkottai and seized the drugs, which were then moved to the Ramanathapuram Customs office.
The prawn farm reportedly belongs to one Sultan from Ramanathapuram and the team has initiated a search for the suspect.
Further investigation is underway.
The latest seizure came less than a week after four people were arrested for allegedly smuggling 99 kg of hashish worth Rs 108 corer to Sri Lanka from Tamil Nadu.
The hashish was seized by officials from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Chennai, and the Indian Coast Guard. (India Today)
