Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said Sri Lanka was the only country in the world that charged the same electricity tariff for nine years.

In this backdrop he said it is not fair to say that Sri Lanka is the country that charges the highest electricity tariff in South Asia.

Addressing the media on Saturday in Colombo the Minister went on to say that despite being invited, none of the members of the Opposition has given any proposal to reduce the electricity tariff, even though they have shouted about it in Parliament.

The Minister also noted that a proposal regarding the lowest tariff margins that can be given has been submitted.

The Minister said that the final responsibility with regards to a tariff revision rests with the Public Utilities Commission and added after they get the public opinions and gives their recommendations, the Electricity Board will prepare proposals regarding the tariff system again. The Minister added that the Cabinet of Ministers and the Finance Ministry will be informed regarding the tariff revision.
