President accepts Keheliya’s resignation

His Ministry to remain under President

Minister Keheliya Rambukwella who is currently in prison tendered his resignation from the post of Environment Minister yesterday.

He had sent his letter of resignation to President Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday and the President had accepted it. Accordingly the Ministry of Environment will be placed under the President.

President’s Secretary Saman Ekanayake issued a special gazette notification yesterday announcing that Keheliya Rambukwella has resigned from the position of Environment Minister with effect from February 3. Keheliya Rambukwella who was arrested on February 2 was later remanded till February 15 by the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court over the controversial human immunoglobulin vaccines procurement.

He is currently admitted in the Prison Hospital. The Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court so far has remanded seven people including Minister Keheliya Rambukwella and former Health Secretary Janaka Chandragupta in connection with this incident.
