Fines after CCTV footage for traffic violations begins today

Traffic fines will be issued from today February 1, for traffic rule violations detected by CCTV cameras installed in key locations within Colombo city limits, after the successful completion of the one week pilot project that was launched on last Monday (22) which ended on Sunday (28) night, Police Media Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa said.

The pilot project of the CCTV programme which was spearheaded to trace motorists violating road rules was launched under the patronage of Public Security Minister Tiran Alles and Acting Inspector General (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon in Colombo last Monday (22).

Over 610 motorists have been detected for traffic offences in Colombo within the last week under the new CCTV programme that was launched by the Traffic Police.

The Police were able to trace 610 motorists who had violated road rules using CCTV camera video footage within one week ending Sunday (28) night.

Traffic offences such as crossing lanes, failure to follow traffic lights, stopping vehicles at no-parking areas and driving disregarding the red light have been traced via the CCTV cameras. Police had warned those who were detected by CCTV camera footage for violating traffic rules during the pilot project.
