Cop held for defrauding people of millions in vehicle scam

A former constable who was attached to VIP security has been arrested for defrauding millions of rupees from several people by promising to help them purchase vehicles under the custody of the Customs for a low price.

He had been arrested by a group of officials from the Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau in front of a night club in Colombo on Saturday.

The Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau stated that the suspect was arrested in connection with an investigation into four complaints received against him. The Police Media Office stated that the fraud that has occurred in relation to these four complaints amounts to Rs. 25.6 million.

The 34-year-old suspect had joined the Police service in 2008 and he had been deemed as to have vacated his post in 2022 after he failed to report to duty after a transfer. He had previously worked at the Presidential Security Division as well.

The Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau also states that this suspect used to take people close to the Customs office and used to go into the office to show he had close connections. He had also used fake documents and photographs to dupe victims.

Police said he is addicted to gambling and has spent money he fraudulently obtained at casinos.
