Aiming at the 2024 Presidential Election, the ‘New Alliance’ commenced its operations on Monday (1), under the leadership of Kurunegala District MP Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, who is its operational leader, Gampaha District MP Nimal Lanza who is the founder of the new alliance, and Puttalam District Leader of the New Alliance, MP Piyankara Jayaratne, at the New Alliance headquarters in Rajagiriya.

MP Lanza, addressing supporters said: “I believe that an election must be held this year and it must be the Presidential Election. If the President wants, he can even hold the Parliamentary, Provincial Council and Local Council Elections.”

“The opinion of the Opposition is that the Parliamentary elections will be called. My opinion is that the President will call the Presidential Election. There are 71 people in Parliament who contested from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), who do not represent the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna. Representing those 71 people, we started a new discourse in Parliament to create a new alliance. We will be able to form the alliance that represents the largest number of MPs in the Parliament, and the largest number of parties representing the Parliament.”

“The political operations of the New Alliance will be actively started from today. During the Presidential Election, our team is working as a strong team to support the President as a broad team.”

Speaking on the occasion New Alliance Operations Leader Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said: “Politics is in a state of confusion today. We ruled as a Left camp from 1994 till May 9 last year. We created a great force in this country.”

“A great deal of work has been done in this country. A new generation is brought into politics. They got certain positions. We were able to appoint our own presidents four or five times. But in the end, our whole politics was destroyed because of someone who is inexperienced and doesn’t understand what politics is.”

“We are at a crossroads. We need to look back at the crossroads and see how we can implement the political idea that we have brought for so long. It will not be possible to do the same as it was then. But we have to think about how we can combine the present and the future and do something new for the people of our country. Democracy in Sri Lanka is in great danger today. Due to the arrangement of family politics in our country, the country became extremely helpless. We are talking to a number of MPs for a new idea that will create a people who understand the political reality.”

Head of New Alliance Operations Office Siripala Amarasinghe, trade union heads and representatives of many supporting parties participated in this event.
