The Posts Ministry of India has taken steps to issue a postage stamp honouring the Sri Lankan hill country people of Indian origin.

With the completion of 200 years since the Tamil people of Indian origin migrated to Sri Lanka, they have made various struggles and sacrifices to win their rights and lead dignified lives.

In such a situation it is seen as a great need for the hill people to be recognized in today’s society, the Governor of the Eastern Province and Chairman of Ceylon Workers’ Congress Senthil Thondaman said.

On the advice of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu BJP President K.Annamalai the stamp is to be issued through the Indian Ministry of Posts at an event to be held tomorrow (30) in New Delhi. National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party, J.P. Nada will present the first stamp to Mr. Senthil Thondaman, and the President of Sri Lanka.

The Ministry of Posts of India has reviewed hundreds of documents and files related to the migration of Tamils of Indian origin to Sri Lanka and has taken steps to issue this stamp with appropriate historical symbols. The historic stamp will be available from tomorrow (30) at more than 155,015 post offices in India, which has the world’s largest postal network.

More than 32,285,425 people of Indian origin have migrated from India and live in more than 210 countries including Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, China, Iran, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Bhutan. The Governor of the Eastern Province states that it is a great honour for the Sri Lankan people.

Beyond the concepts of help, duty and responsibility, we should respect our people and give them recognition issuing a stamp for the Tamil people of Indian origin living in Sri Lanka is not only a declaration of friendship between the two countries but also respects the people of the hills of Sri Lanka, Senthil Thondaman, Governor of the Eastern Province and President of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress said.
