A survey conducted by the Ministry of Health in 2021–2022 has found that 80% of the annual deaths in Sri Lanka are caused by Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and their complications.

It shows that 15% of the population under 35, suffer from diabetes and 35% from high blood pressure.

2021-2022 survey data has made it clear that the main reason for this is a lack of interest in physical health.

The findings of this survey were revealed at the opening of the physical wellness unit at the Health Ministry premises yesterday (14) by Health Ministry Secretary Dr.Palitha Mahipala.

The establishment of this physical wellness unit was motivated by the desire to enhance the quality of the Ministry of Health’s human resources by giving more consideration to the physical well-being of Ministry personnel.

This physical health unit was established based on funding from the World Health Organization. This wellness unit aims to promote physical wellness, control infectious diseases, reduce stress, and improve mental wellness. The Health Ministry has planned to establish such physical health units in government hospitals in the future.
