Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha told Parliament yesterday that he would request the Finance Ministry officials to take steps to exempt exercise books and stationery from VAT.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the increase in VAT will apply to all types of goods, including goods that were not subject to VAT earlier.

“The debate on the VAT Amendment Bill is scheduled to be held this Sunday. In that debate, we can clarify our doubts regarding the charging of VAT,” he said while answering a question raised by MP Dullas Alahapperuma.
