The Attorney General requested the Gampaha High Court’s three-judge Bench for permission to use facial recognition identification technology to identify the suspects involved in the murder of former Polonnaruwa MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his Police Sergeant guard.

Deputy Solicitor General Janaka Bandara, who appeared on behalf of the Attorney General stated that it is expected to use video technology to identify the faces of the suspects in the CCTV footage of the incident related to this case.

This is the first time that the Attorney General’s Department has used video technology to identify suspects in a murder case. When the murder case was called for hearing on the December 1, the three-judge Bench allowed the perusal of videos related to the incident to be shown on a wide screen in open Court, rejecting an objection raised by the defence lawyer.
