MP Namal Rajapaksa said that existing laws should be amended in order to prevent misuse of Parliamentary privileges to sling mud at people.
He said that it is necessary to bring new laws or amend the existing laws in this regard.
The MP told the media who inquired about the various statements made by the Opposition using Parliamentary privileges these days.
“All 225 of us should come together and control indiscipline, misbehavior and hate speech in Parliament,” Rajapaksa said. “Using Parliamentary privilege to slander children and families cannot be accepted.”
“Slandering someone who does not represent the Parliament, insulting the Court, criticizing the Judges, targeting individuals and making fraudulent statements under the guise of Parliamentary privileges should be stopped immediately,” the MP said.
“The fact that you can say anything in Parliament should be removed and amendments or new laws should be brought to the Parliamentary privileges code,” he said.
“If we cannot do that, some people will pressure the other persons by telling them everything that comes to their mouth by using Parliamentary privileges. Therefore, we suggest that the existing laws should be amended for that purpose.”
