The Kandy Municipal Council (KMC) has filed complaints with the Kandy Police against the two female officers implicated in the multi-million rupee financial fraud of the Kandy Municipal Council; however, the Kandy Police have yet to apprehend the suspects.
One suspect, who was an Accounts section employee at the Kandy Municipal Council, was accused of defrauding Rs.21.7 million by submitting fake receipts while charging the rent of the shop rooms belonging to the Municipal Council and transferring the shop rooms to others. Police have taken steps to obtain an order against this suspect to prevent her from travelling abroad after a written request by the Municipal Commissioner to the Central Province Deputy Inspector General in this regard.
Another suspect was a Chief Managerial Service Officer of the Kandy Municipal Council and she also took Rs.5.1 million for her daughter’s wedding.The Municipal Council has also filed a complaint with Police in this regard. Municipal Council employees have complained that Police investigations into these two financial fraud instances are proceeding slowly. An investigation committee was appointed by the Local Government Commissioner on the advice of Central Province Governor Lalith Gamage, regarding the related frauds. Based on the investigation reports, the services of the two concerned employees have been suspended.
