Girls’ overall champion Ave Maria Convent Negombo team with officials

Royal College Colombo and Ave Maria Convent Negombo were crowned as the champions of the Ritzbury 52nd Sir John Tarbat Junior Athletic Championship. The event, organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Athletics Association and sponsored by Ritzbury, came to an end at Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

In a close battle, Royal College secured the top spot with 44 points, closely followed by Trinity College as the runners-up with 42.5 points. Maris Stella College Negombo, the recent All Island School Games champions, claimed the third spot with 42 points, narrowly missing out on second place by just 0.5 points.

Despite Maris Stella’s commendable performance, Ave Maria Convent, another school from Negombo, dominated the girls’ category, clinching the championship with an impressive 83 points. The runners-up, Lyceum International School Wattala, All Island Schools Game champions, secured 57 points. Mahamaya Girls College Kadawatha secured the third position with 40.5 points.

The championship also recognized outstanding individual achievements. S Pribasith of S Thomas’ Preparatory College Mount Lavinia was honored with the Best Boys’ Athlete award for his remarkable performance in the Boys Under-15 High Jump event, earning 827 points by clearing a distance of 1.90 meters.

AD Nethsara of Lyceum International School Wattala received the Best Girls’ Athlete award for her exceptional performance in the Girls Under-14 Long Jump event, amassing 921 points with a remarkable leap of 5.64 meters.

The final day of the three-day event saw the establishment of eight new meet records, adding to the previous counts of four on the first day and five on the second day, showcasing the exceptional talent and athleticism displayed throughout the three-day championship.
