Dilki Dewmini Karunaratne, representing Visakha Vidyalaya, and two other exceptional athletes, showcased remarkable performances on the first day of the Ritzbury 52nd Sir John Tarbat Junior Athletic Championship, held at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday. Their efforts led to the establishment of three new meet records.
Karunaratne competed in the Under-14 Girls Discus Throw category and set a new meet record with a remarkable throw of 34.88 metres. This outstanding performance earned her the gold medal and the distinction of being the sole girl to establish a new meet record on the tournament’s first day.
In addition to Karunaratne’s achievement, two young boys also made their mark in the record books. DMC Rajasinghe, representing Prince of Wales College in Moratuwa, excelled in the Under-14 Shot Putt event, securing the gold medal with a record-breaking throw of 15.17 metres.
On the track, DAS Shamalka of Gonagala Maha Vidyalaya in Bentota delivered an exceptional performance, setting a new meet record in the Boys 200m final. Shamalka’s sprint, clocked at 25.2 seconds, earned him the gold medal.
The 52nd Ritzbury Sir John Tarbat Junior Athletic Championship, organized by the Sri Lanka School Athletics Association and sponsored by Ritzbury, is set to continue on its second day with a full schedule of exciting track and field events today.
