The heart of Sri Lankan cricket feels heavy as it bids farewell to a dear friend and supporter, Percy Abeysekera, affectionately known as ‘Uncle Percy’. His funeral, a time to honor his legacy, will take place today at 4 PM at the General Cemetery Kanatta in Borella.
For more than seven decades, Uncle Percy stood as the one-man cheer squad for Sri Lankan cricket, his Lion Flag waving proudly at matches. He had a unique talent for crafting fantastic English rhymes, creating a special bond with cricket players and fans alike.
At the age of 87, Uncle Percy passed away, leaving a significant gap in the hearts of cricket lovers. His body rests at the VIP Respect Parlor of Jayaratne until 4 PM, followed by cremation at the Borella General Cemetery. His absence is deeply felt in the cricketing world, leaving behind his witty cricket rhymes and his iconic Lion Flag, which won’t flutter the same way during Sri Lankan matches.
As a touching tribute to his unwavering support, both Sri Lankan and Indian cricketers in the ICC World Cup Cricket match at Wankhede will don black armbands in honor of Uncle Percy. This gesture marks the high esteem in which he was held by the cricketing community.
During the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka earlier this year, Indian captain Rohit Sharma paid a visit to Uncle Percy at his home, displaying the strong bond and respect shared between them.
Today, amidst tears and heartfelt goodbyes, Sri Lanka cricket bids adieu to Uncle Percy. His infectious enthusiasm, witty rhymes, and the Lion Flag he proudly waved will be dearly missed, leaving an indelible mark on the cricketing world. Uncle Percy’s spirit will live on in the cherished memories of all who knew and admired this extraordinary cricket supporter.
