The United Nations celebrates its 78th anniversary today (24). Saudi Arabia participates as an active member of the international community in the various tasks within the organisation’s work.

Saudi Arabia joined the United Nations as a member of the Charter on June 26, 1945. Since its signing of the Charter, the Kingdom has continued to support and champion the efforts of the international community in an effort to establish international peace and security, based on its political weight and its pioneering role in the Arab and Islamic world, and in common with the principles of the Charter. It is still working to address various issues through constructive dialogue, providing humanitarian and relief aid, and combating terrorism.

The Kingdom’s efforts, by virtue of its membership and active role in the organisation, gave voice to an Arab, Islamic, and international voice, translated by the speeches of its leaders from the United Nations podium in defense of various Arab and Islamic issues, and in support of issues of security and peace, and continuous calls for dialogue among civilizations, in addition to confronting terrorism, and issues of development, relief, and humanitarian work. In addition to establishing human relations on the principles of truth, brotherhood, and justice among peoples.

The Kingdom’s efforts were not limited to annual participation in United Nations celebrations and meetings only, but rather the Kingdom has always affirmed its keenness to work to support the United Nations, its agencies, committees and affiliated organisations through financial, logistical and in-kind support and initiatives.

One of the Kingdom’s most prominent efforts in supporting the United Nations was submitting a proposal to establish an international counter-terrorism centre. In September 2011, the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Centre was launched, and Saudi Arabia announced at that time its contribution of ten million dollars to cover the centre’s budget for three years.

Among the aspects of the Kingdom’s support for the work of the United Nations, it signed an agreement to establish the ‘King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Global Centre for Dialogue’ on October 13, 2011.

The Kingdom’s support has many aspects, including contributing to reducing the effects of natural disasters and combating poverty and diseases through its donation to multiple United Nations funds, including the World Food Programme, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The Kingdom is among the main supporters of the United Nations in various fields. The Kingdom has shown its absolute solidarity with the organisation, as Saudi Arabia has contributed to a number of international organisations and bodies, including the United Nations. The Kingdom’s contribution to the United Nations amounted to 439,583,602 million US dollars.
