Investigations have revealed that the shooting which took place Saturday (21) at around 7.30 pm near Ahungalla Galvehera School, injuring a four month-old child and the child’s parents, was the result of a power struggle between two underworld gangs.
Police say that the baby’s father is the brother of the wife of an underworld criminal involved in drug trafficking known as ‘Baca’. He is currently in Dubai.
A senior police officer said that Baba is in the group run by Ratgama Vidura and it is suspected that the attack was carried out by Kosgoda Sujee’s group. The officer also said that the current conflict between the two gangs of Vidura and Sujee has escalated to the point where even the members of the two families were being targeted. The officer mentioned that child’s father owns a furniture shop and the firing had happened when he was going home on his motorcycle after closing the shop.
The officer said that the investigation revealed that 21 shots were fired from a T-56 weapon. The shots were also fired by two people on a motorcycle.
Police say that the father drove the motorcycle home to protect the life of his child and wife in the face of gunfire. The three of them were admitted to Balapitiya Hospital after that. Balapitiya Base Hospital said that the man and his four-month-old child, who were injured by gunshots, were sent to Galle Karapitiya Teaching Hospital for further treatment.
Hospital sources said that the child’s leg will have to be operated.
