Sri Lanka Army celebrates 74th anniversary today

The Sri Lanka Army, ‘the Defenders of the Nation’, will proudly celebrate its 74th anniversary today in accordance with Military traditions under the auspices of Army Commander Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage as the chief guest at the Army Cantonment, Panagoda, Homagama.

The Sri Lanka Army was established on October 10, 1949, subsequently after achieving independence on February 4, 1948, making Sri Lanka a free and sovereign state which once prevailed as a colony under the British Crown. Since then, the Sri Lanka Army has had the strength to face any challenge levelled against the motherland and win. In particular, the Sri Lankan Army was able to defeat one of the world’s most ruthless terrorists, the LTTE, in 2009 and give complete freedom to the entire Sri Lankan people.

It is also special that Sri Lanka Army who always comes forward to help people during national calamities is providing immediate relief to the people affected by the floods in the south at the moment.

The Sri Lanka Army is the bravest and most disciplined in the world who rendered a yeomen service to free hundreds of thousands of innocent people from the clutches of the LTTE in the last humanitarian operation which remains indelible in the hearts of the entire people.

During the COVID-19 epidemic, the mission of the Army to save the people from the disaster is also priceless.

The Sri Lanka Army, which has a rich history, celebrates its 74th anniversary this year with pride giving priority to all religious rites. Aspecial ceremony was also held to commemorate the thousands of fallen war heroes who sacrificed their precious lives in order to restore peace and harmony in the country.
