Another Police Constable attached to the CID who allegedly assisted the notorious underworld criminal Nadun Chinthaka Wickramaratne alias Harak Kata’s escape attempt from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been arrested.
The CID has arrested a Police constable attached to the High Court Division of the CID on suspicion of aiding and abetting Harak Kata’s recent escape attempt. When Harak Kata attempted to escape from the Criminal Investigation Department on September 10, this officer was said to be working in the Public Complaints Investigation Department of the Criminal Investigation Department, which was conducting investigations regarding Harak Kata.
According to sources, the team investigating Harak Kata’s escape attempt is keeping a close eye on several more officers working in the CID on suspicion they too may have played part in the plan. The arrested officer will be handed over to the Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) for further investigation. The Constable, who has directly supported Harak Kata’s escape bid from the CID premises on September 10, has not been arrested so far and remains at large.
A senior Police officer said that so far no reliable information has been received that he has fled the country.Investigators have unearthed a lot of information related to the plan hatched to assist Harak Kata to escape from the CID.
In the first 24 hours after the escape plan failed, during the search operation in the Criminal Investigation Department, the investigators of the Criminal Investigation Department found a suspicious motorcycle with two safety helmets.
According to sources, the motorcycle was found between the vehicles of two top Police officers.
Sources revealed that the owner of this motorcycle has been investigated, and how it was brought into the premises of the Criminal Investigation Department.
There are two entrances to the Criminal Investigation Department. One is from the Police Headquarters and the other gate is on the side of the President’s house. Sources said that there is no record of who rode the motorcycle using the two gates.
Even the security camera system of the Criminal Investigation Department was not working, so it was not possible to clearly detect who was riding it.
Since there was no owner of this motorcycle and there were two safety helmets on it, there is a suspicion whether there was a plan to use the motorcycle in the escape bid.
During the investigation, it has been found that the engine numbers and chassis numbers of this motorcycle have been deleted.
But following a thorough investigation, those numbers were discovered and checked with the assistance of the motor vehicle registration department. It has been found that the last registered owner of this motorcycle is a bank officer. It had changed hands among several persons and the person who last bought it has said it was stolen. Officers of the Colombo Crime Division had also found a car that had been prepared to take Harak Kata.
The car had been taken on rent from a company in Matara. Investigations carried out by the Colombo Crime Division have revealed that the Constable fled in the car after the unsuccessful attempt.
Four followers of Harak Kata, who supported him for that, were also arrested by the officers of the Colombo Crimes Division and are being held under investigation.
It is said that Midigama Ruwan, one of Harak Kata’s main disciples, has led these team from Dubai. A senior Police officer said that investigations done so far have shown that there was not one plan but several plans to help Harak Kata escape.
