Nabbed with smuggled cigarettes worth Rs.1.14 Mn at airport

Police Narcotics Bureau arrested a Sri Lankan who tried to smuggle a stock of foreign made cigarettes valued at Rs.1.14 million from Doha, Qatar at the arrival terminal of Katunayake Airport on Wednesday (27).

The suspect is a 30-years-old resident of Kekirawa area and he had worked as a taxi driver in Qatar.

He came to the Katunayake Airport on flight QR 658 on Wednesday.

Fifty seven cartons of cigarettes containing 11,400 cigarettes of the foreign made ‘Gold Leaf’ type were hidden in his luggage when he was arrested.

This passenger has been released on Police bail and will be handed over to the Negombo Magistrate’s Court along with the seized cigarettes on October 4.
