Colombo National Hospital’s Chief Nursing Training Officer Pushpa Ramyani de Soysa who won two international awards as the most powerful and influential woman in the world from the British Parliament and UK’s Global Chamber of Commerce, arrived yesterday morning (22).
Pushpa Ramyani said at the Katunayake airport that she had been given these awards in recognition of her dedication of wealth, time and effort outside of public service.
Pushpa Ramyani further said that she received an award from the British Parliament after the British Parliament and Queen Victoria awarded Florence Nightingale to represent the world’s health sector.
Expressing her views about the current Nursing Service in Sri Lanka, she said that although the health sector in Sri Lanka needs 75,000 nurses, there are currently only 38,000. She also stated that due to this, full nursing care cannot be provided to the patients entering the hospitals. She also revealed that not only doctors but also nurses are attracted to work in Western countries including US and UK.
She further pointed out that some time back 5,000 were recruited to the nursing service, and since they are going to retire in the coming years, the nursing service in Sri Lanka will lose 5,000 at the same time. Her close family members and her fellow nurses welcome her.
