Prison Sergeant arrested for sheltering murder suspects

The Colombo Crime Division said that a Sergeant of the Remand Prison in Colombo, who is said to have sheltered three suspects in two murder cases which took place

in Borella and Galapitamada were arrested. A suitcase, a pair of black shoes, a blue towel, a pair of white shorts, a hat, a mobile phone, a motorcycle key and an identity card which were found in the house where the suspects had been staying were taken into police custody.

During the interrogation of the suspect named ‘Chathuwa,’ who was arrested on September 2 in Niyandurupola in Warakapola for riding a motorcycle helping to kill Weragoda Arachchilage Sarath Weragoda who was travelling in a vehicle in the Galapitamada Dunumala area on July 14, 2023 with a T56 firearm, who is being held on detention orders, based on information revealed by him, the Police arrested the Prison Sergeant.

In addition to this, it had been revealed during police investigations that on May 20 this year, when shot and killed an individual, the suspect Wanathe Chutta who rode the motorcycle used in the murder and another person whose identity has not yet been confirmed, had been provided accommodation by this suspect, the Prison Sergeant, on the third floor of his three-storeyed house at Nawala Avenue in Nawala, Rajagiriya.

The suspect Prison Sergeant will be produced in court. A team of Police officers including Inspector Duminda Jayathilaka, Officer-In-Charge of the Organized Crime Investigation Division, is conducting investigations, based n the instructions of Director of the Colombo Crimes Division, ASP Neville de Silva and Chief Inspector Anslem de Silva.
