As the 19th Asian Games’ grand opening ceremony approaches, all eyes are on the remarkable story of Anura Rohana, a 52-year-old Sri Lankan golfing legend and Asian Games silver medalist. Rohana is set to create history by becoming the oldest flag bearer in the Asian Games’ illustrious history since its inception in 1951.

Having secured a silver medal in the 14th Asian Games held in Busan, South Korea, back in 2002, Anura Rohana is preparing for another historic moment. He returns to the Asian Games with an astonishing two-decade experience, marking his fourth appearance since his debut in 1998.

Recognizing his unparalleled achievements and four decades of experience in the world of golf, the Sri Lanka National Olympic Committee recently appointed Anura Rohana as the men’s team captain, alongside women’s team captain Gayanthika Abeyratne.

Rohana expressed his joy at this rare opportunity, saying, “I was really happy when I received this rare opportunity.” He recently secured the runner-up position in the Sri Lanka Golf September Ranking Tournament, showcasing his enduring skill and passion for the sport.

Sri Lanka faces stiff competition from golfing powerhouses like Japan, Thailand, Korea, and Asian heavyweight India at the Asian Games. Rohana, however, exudes confidence in the Sri Lankan golf team’s ability, stating, “Our golf team is in good form and has a real chance to win a medal. We also have the potential to secure an individual medal.”

Reflecting on his journey, Rohana stated, “I began playing golf at the age of 10. I took part in my first Asian Games in 1998, followed by appearances in 2002 and 2018.” This year, he proudly represents Sri Lanka for the fourth time at the Asian Games.

In a dual role, Anura Rohana will captain both the 97-member Sri Lankan Asian Games contingent and the four-member golf team, which includes professional golfers Mithun Perera, Nadaraja Thangaraja, and K. Prabagaran.

“This time, with this team, we have a genuine shot at winning a medal. We’ve been performing exceptionally well in Indian tournaments, and according to the current rankings, our chances look promising,” Rohana declared optimistically.
