Another Meningococcal case reported from Ratmalana

A patient with similar symptoms to the Meningococcal disease, which caused the deaths of two inmates at the Galle Prison has been reported from the Colombo district.

The detected person aged 49 is employed at an office in Ratmalana and is a resident of Ja-Ela.

The patient had been admitted to the Kotelawala  Defence University Hospital with fever and later had been transferred to the Colombo National Hospital after developing symptoms similar to the Meningococcal disease, the PHI for Ratmalana area said. He further said that about 30 close contacts of the place where this person works were examined and steps were taken to provide antibiotics.

Meanwhile, Deputy Health Services Director General Dr. G. Wijesuriya told media yesterday that about 30 close associates of the patient were examined and given antibiotics.

He also said that it has not yet been confirmed that the patient was suffering from the above illness and people had no reason to worry about it.
