Two Nations, One Wisdom

In a groundbreaking move towards global health and scientific advancement, representatives from China’s Liaoning Province and Sri Lanka convened to discuss a momentous collaboration centred around the development and promotion of indigenous and traditional medicine. The meeting, held at the China Medical University of Belt & Road International Medical Education Alliance (BRIMEA) in the picturesque city of Shenyang, Liaoning Province, marked a significant step towards harnessing the rich heritage of both nations to enhance healthcare and well-being on an international scale.

The delegation from Sri Lanka led by Professor Chandrasiri Waliwita, the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine (GWUIM) under the directions of Professor Ranjana W Senevirathna, Vice Chancellor of Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine (GWUIM), arrived in Shenyang with an agenda aimed at sharing knowledge, expertise, and methodologies related to traditional medicine. With a centuries-old history of traditional healing practices, Sri Lanka possesses a treasure trove of knowledge that has been handed down through generations. By joining forces with China, a country renowned for its extensive history of traditional medicine, both nations are poised to foster an exchange of wisdom that could lead to breakthroughs in healthcare and holistic well-being.

During the day-long summit, participants engaged in robust discussions ranging from the documentation of traditional healing methods to the integration of these practices into mainstream healthcare systems. Both sides acknowledged the significance of evidence-based research to validate the efficacy of these age-old treatments and their potential to complement modern medical approaches.

President of BRIMEA and Vice Chancellor of China Medical University, Professor Wang Zhenning echoed this sentiment, noting, “Our shared commitment to advancing traditional medicine reflects a deep understanding of the holistic nature of health. By pooling our resources and expertise, we can explore new avenues of healing that could benefit people worldwide.”

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Lu Xiaodong of Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, stated that the avenues are open to share the resources of the University for Professional Development, Development of Medical Education, Research and Innovations by cooperating with the recent Advances of Science and Technology.

The outcomes of this meeting extend beyond bilateral cooperation. The commitment to research, development, and dissemination of knowledge regarding traditional medicine has the potential to create a ripple effect that could positively impact global healthcare practices. Moreover, the collaboration signifies a diplomatic bond between two nations rooted in a mutual desire to preserve cultural heritage while fostering innovation.

The Liaoning Province, situated in Northeastern China, is not only celebrated for its economic and technological prowess but also for its dedication to preserving and enhancing traditional medical practices.

At the following Liaoning Government meeting, the Deputy Director of Foreign Affairs Office, Liu Tianyu together with the Deputy Director of Liaoning Health Commission. Yang Dongxiang, welcomed the Sri Lankan delegation with open arms, emphasizing their shared commitment to exploring the potential of traditional medicine in addressing modern health challenges and witnessed the official MoU exchange ceremony between Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and GWUIM. Doctors and student exchange programs are expected to kick off soon after.

Professor Chandrasiri Waliwita highlighted the importance of this collaboration, stating, “Sri Lanka is immensely proud of its traditional medicine heritage, and we believe that by working together with China, we can elevate the status of these practices on a global scale. Our combined efforts could lead to the development of innovative treatment methods that merge the best of both ancient wisdom and modern science.”

Dedicated efforts done by Wayne Yang, President of APAC SYNERGY and Sirimal Senaratan, Member of the Council of GWUIM together with Dr. Asanka, Director of GWUIM International Centre were highly appreciated by both parties.

As the conference drew to a close, both parties agreed to establish a joint task force responsible for outlining the parameters of their collaboration, including research initiatives, funding mechanisms, and knowledge-sharing platforms. The spirit of unity and common purpose that defined the day serves as a testament to the power of international cooperation in addressing pressing global challenges. As the world watches with anticipation, the partnership between China’s Liaoning Province and Sri Lanka embarks on a journey that could reshape the landscape of healthcare and well-being.
