The Nuwara Eliya Police said that one young man was killed and six others were injured and admitted to the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital when wasps attacked a group of people who went to cut firewood in the Nuwara Eliya Bambarakele Reserve.
Sivakumaran Dilshan (17), a resident of Bambarakele Estate, Nuwara Eliya, died as a result of the wasp bites.
Last Sunday (20), the deceased youth went to Bambarakele Reserve with another group to cut firewood. Due to the extremely dry weather, a wasp hive that was in a tree broke up and the wasps attacked the group. The Nuwara Eliya Police, who is investigating the wasp attack, said that the young man died on the spot because the wasps attacked him after the hive fell on a rock.
The rest of the people who were injured in the attack were treated at the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital and have now been discharged.
The body of the deceased youth has been sent to the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital for postmortem examination.
