United National Party Chairman Member of Parliament Vajira Abeywardena said that he is confident that President Ranil Wickremesinghe will be able to turn Sri Lanka from a borrowing country presently into a lending country in the future.
MP Abeywardena said this while addressing the United National Party Constituency Committee meeting held on Sunday (13) in Tissamaharama Constituency, Hambantota District.
He also said: “The leader of the party, President Ranil Wickremesinghe hopes to convene the party convention and change the party constitution by the beginning of next month. We are changing the party constitution to suit the modern world. If the country is to move forward with the world, the political parties must change accordingly.”
“According to President Ranil Wickremesinghe, we can no longer move forward with old branch societies and old women’s societies and our party should also be digitized.”
“Some people say that you should not rule the country after losing. The first Prime Minister of our country D.S. Senanayaka also lost before becoming Prime Minister. Even though he lost, he gathered all the people of the country without distinctions of race, party, caste or religion and gave a message to the world that we are united. That is how we got independence in 1948. In the same way, Ranil Wickremesinghe invited everyone in the Parliament to come together as soon as he took over this collapsed country.”
“Today, some people talk about 75 years of history. In the history of 75 years, political parties have divided and lied, so we have this situation today.”
“Political parties can no longer lie. The people of the country cannot be deceived by saying that they are giving this and that. Ranil Wickremesinghe established a Budget office in the Parliament for that purpose. If they just give something for free, they should tell this office how it is given free. Then the office will inform whether it can be done or not. Ranil Wickremesinghe is doing all these things to protect the entire public of the country”.
