Shooting at Pitipana toll collector, a contract from Dubai

A person who collects tolls from vehicles parked at the Pitipana Fish Auction in Negombo was shot and killed yesterday (13) at the auction itself.

Preliminary police investigations have revealed that it was done according to a contract.

The Police are investigating this murder from several angles. Heenatiyana Mahesh, a criminal operating from Dubai, is suspected of planning this murder and committing with the support of his associates.

Dhanushka Anjana Umayanga Fernando (25), a resident of North Pitipana, Negombo was killed in this shooting.Police say that so far no information has been revealed that this man is involved in underworld crimes.

Police say that the deceased who is parking contractor by profession and involved in bodybuilding. Investigations have also revealed that this he was scheduled to participate in a bodybuilding competition. Police are studying whether there is a connection between the killing and that competition.

A senior Police officer said that there is a doubt that the killing could have been led by someone who was a competitor of the tender of the park at the auction. The officer further said that there was a strong suspicion that the killing was done under a contract by a certain person due to a romantic affair the deceased might have had.

While the deceased person was issuing tickets to parked vehicles at the auction, at around 9.15 a.m. on Saturday (12), a man on a motorcycle approached, shot him in the head and fled Police said. He had succumbed to injuries by the time he was admitted to the Negombo hospital. A 9 mm type pistol has been used for shooting. Police also found six empty cartridges on the ground.

Negombo Acting Magistrate Primal Amarasinghe conducted the preliminary magisterial investigation and ordered the police to conduct a post-mortem examination at the Negombo Hospital and hand over the body to the next of kin. A team of officers including Acting OIC of Dungalpitiya Police Chief Inspector H.K.Rohana de Silva are conducting investigations.
