Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya Kiribathgoda made an impressive debut in the School Boxing Tournament, securing the prestigious Neiva Embuldeniya Trophy at the Seevali College Boxing Gymnasium Ratnapura. The tournament witnessed a record-breaking participation of 701 boxers representing 98 schools.
The Viharamahadevians’ boxing team, comprising five talented boxers, achieved commendable success by claiming two gold medals and two bronze medals. The outstanding performance was celebrated by the entire school community.
Hiruni Fernando, competing in the 50-52kg weight class, showcased her skills and determination, securing a well-deserved gold medal. Aparna Wijesinghe displayed her boxing prowess in the 57-60kg weight category, also clinching a gold medal.
Additionally, Jayangi de Silva and Dinashi Michelle brought pride to their school by securing bronze medals in the 44-46kg and 48-50kg weight classes, respectively.
The school’s journey to success started in 2019 when Sri Lanka National Boxer Sehani Illangaratne, a prominent figure who represented the country at the 2020 Dubai Asian Boxing Championships, was appointed as the Boxing Coach. Under her expert guidance, Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya Kiribathgoda ventured into the world of boxing for the first time in its history.
Sehani Illangaratne, expressing her joy and satisfaction, said, “I am really happy to achieve this milestone. We couldn’t practice for almost two years due to the pandemic and the crisis.” The school’s perseverance and dedication have proven fruitful, culminating in a remarkable victory in the Schools Junior Girls Boxing Championship.
