Four Capybaras have recently joined the animal collection of the National Zoological Department. Capybaras are the largest rodents in the world, and they can grow up to eight feet long and weigh up to 35-66 kg.

They are native to South America and are often seen swimming in rivers and lakes. Capybaras are herbivores and eat a variety of grasses, leaves, and fruits. They are social animals and live in groups of up to 100 individuals. Capybaras have a life span of eight to ten years.

Two capybara females and two males were brought to Sri Lanka from Slovakia, a country in Central Europe, on July 5, under the animal exchange programme carried out by the National Zoological Department with the aim of increasing animal conservation.

The Director General of the National Zoological Department Dr. Thilak Premakantha told the Daily News that these animals have been quarantined at the Dehiwala Zoo for a month since July 6. After quarantine, two of the four capybaras are expected to be sent to Pinnawala Zoo, the Director General said.
