England pulled off a dramatic 49-run victory over Australia in the fifth and final Ashes Test match and to level the series 2-2 at The Oval in London yesterday.

Chasing a victory target of 384 runs, Australia were cruising along at one stage before England clawed their way back into the game with Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali sharing the wickets.

The retiring Stuart Broad fittingly captured the last Australian wicket as he dismissed wicket-keeper batsman Alex Carey for a determined 28 as the visitors were bowled out for 334 in their second innings.

Australia, resuming from their overnight score of 135 for no loss, lost both openers David Warner and Usman Khawaja in the space of six deliveries as Woakes provided the early breakthrough.

However, Steven Smith and Travis Head revived the Australian innings with a fighting fourth wicket stand of 95 runs before they slumped to 294 for eight.

Chief scores

England: 283 and 395

Australia: 295 and 334 (David Warner 60, Usman Khawaja 72, Steven Smith 54, Travis Head 43, Alex Carey 28, Chris Woakes 4/50, Moeen Ali 3/76). C.D.
