Sandaruwan wins Pole Vault final of Athletic Nationals

M.H.I. Sandaruwan of Sri Lanka Air Force won Pole Vault men’s final with a leap of 4.90 metres at the 101st National Senior Athletic Championship which started at Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo yesterday.

Siva Subramani the Indian athlete with the same achievement of 4.90 metres was placed second while Army’s A. Puvitharan with same distance of 4.90 metres was placed third at this pole vault final.

Meanwhile Indian athlete Seema was able to finish first at women’s 10,000m event in 35 minutes and 39.33 seconds in the morning yesterday while H.M.W.G.W.M Herath of Army with 36 minutes 09.08 seconds was placed second and third place won by M.S.P.M Perera of Sri Lanka Navy with a time of 36 minutes and 53.06 seconds.

The 100 m men’s and women’s heats also were conducted yesterday while semi finals and finals will be held today and most of the finals including relay events will be held tomorrow (Sunday) the final day.

Meanwhile Susantha Fernando the coach of Tharushi Karunaratne said due to heavy schedule Tharushi will compete only in the 800m which will be held tomorrow.

Sri Lanka Athletic (SLC) is conducting the National senior Championship which will serve as a trial for world Athletic championship and this is the final chance for Sri Lanka athletes to get qualification for Hungarian World Athletic Championship. Apart from Indian athletes Maldivian athletes are competing in this three day event.
