Bodies of mother, daughter washed ashore in Kalutara identified

The body of a 26-month-old baby girl was washed to the seashore near Nagashandiya beach, Kalutara on Wednesday night (26). The body of the baby’s mother was also recovered by local residents on Thurs day morning (27) while floating near the rip-rap in Kalutara North. Kalutara North Police said that the deceased woman’s husband identified the bodies at the Kalutara Teaching Hospital yesterday afternoon.

The police further said that the dead are Ratnayake Mudiyansela Sandamali Deepika Kumari (31), and her daughter, Nethuni Nuwansa, who is two years and two months old, residing in Eladuwa, Halkandawila, Payagala. There were frequent family disputes between the deceased woman and her husband. Police said that both of them were residing in Walakanda, Matugama Walakanda and about two weeks ago, the woman had left the husband’s house along with her daughter. She had come to her father’s residence in Eladuwa. Her father said that the woman had been staying there with her daughter for a few days and on July 19, she left with her daughter to go back to her husband’s residence in Matugama. He too said that there had been family disputes between the two since some time and she had run away from the husband’s house when she went there for the last time.

The bodies of the deceased woman and child have been placed in the mortuary of the Kalutara Teaching Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The deceased woman’s husband was summoned to the Kalutara North Police yesterday afternoon to record a statement.
