A Police Sergeant from the Rambukkana Police who entered a house while on night mobile patrol duty and harassed and sexually
assaulted a woman was caught by the householders, tied to a tree and handed over to the Police early on morning of July 25.
Police said that this officer entered a house in Ihalagama, Rambukkana Parape in the middle of the night and sexually assaulted a 60-year-old woman.
Two Police Constables have been deployed on mobile patrol security duty in a Police cab under the leadership of this Sergeant, from 6 pm on July 24 to 6 am on 25. The Sergeant in charge of this team was engaged in mobile patrol duty in the cab on 24 around 11.30 pm when he suddenly told the other officers that he had to go to the police station and got out of the cab and left.
The other officers told their superiors that he got out of the cab in an area near the Police and told them that he will go to the police station and come back soon.
Meanwhile, after midnight, the Rambukkana Police had received a message on the 119- emergency call department that a thief had entered a house in Ihalagama, Rambukkana Parape.
Accordingly, the two officers on duty connected to 119-emergency calls of the Rambukkana Police, who took immediate action had gone to the place mentioned in the message on a motorcycle with the officers who were on duty in the night security patrol cab. There, the officers had seen the Police Sergeant still in uniform, tied to a tree in front of the house.
A motorcycle belonging to the police sergeant was also found at that place. Investigations had revealed that this officer had gone to the Police Station, taken his motorcycle and gone to this house. Upon questioning, the sergeant had told the Police that he went to the 60-year-old woman’s house on her invitation. However, the woman had said that she had nothing to do with the officer and that he had entered the house and harassed her.
Based on her statements, Rambukkana Police arrested this officer and produced him at the Kegalle Magistrate’s Court. He was remanded until August 3. Police officers had also taken steps to interdict the officer due to his misconduct and entering a house while on duty.
