Anguruwathota murders: Suspect had pawned victim’s necklace

The Panadura Division Criminal Investigation Division has obtained Court orders to ascertain whether the Army soldier, the main suspect who has been arrested and remanded for the murder of Anguruwathota woman and her little daughter, has pawned the gold necklace worn by the murdered woman.

Investigations revealed that the suspect had come to a pawn shop in Horana on July 21 and had pawned a gold necklace and obtained Rs.48,000 it was revealed during investigations conducted through the identity card number of the suspect. And for further investigations in this regard, CCTV footage will be obtained from the pawning centre.

The murdered woman and her infant daughter disappeared from their house on July 18 and three days later, on July 21, their bodies were found by the Police in a jungle in Ratmalgoda, about 700 meters away.

The husband of the murdered woman had lodged a complaint with the Anguruwathota Police that he was suspicious of his brother-in-law’s disappearance on the night of the disappearance of his wife and daughter, and as a result, the suspect was arrested by the Police and released two days later. After discovering the bodies of the mother and daughter, the suspect was arrested by the Police in the Warakagoda area the next day on July 22 and admitted to Horana Base Hospital for treatment and remanded.

A hospital spokesperson said that the suspect, who was detained at Horana Base Hospital under the protection of prison officials, was transferred to Kalutara Nagoda General Hospital on July 24.

Panadura Division Criminal Investigation Division OIC Chief Inspector C. A. P. S. Amarasekara, Inspector P. N. D. T. R. Tillakaratne, Police Sergeants Anura (27061) and Lal (18397) are conducting investigations.
