Since its inception in 1979, the National Youth Services Council (NYSC) has been a guiding light for the young minds of Sri Lanka, providing them with a platform to embrace their potential and contribute to society’s progress. Under the visionary leadership of Chairman and Director-General Pasindu Guneratne, the NYSC has embarked on a transformational journey to keep pace with the rapidly evolving digital landscape, empowering the country’s youth for a bright and promising future.

The NYSC, the flagship government body dedicated to the youth, recognises the profound impact of digitalisation on today’s generation. Chairman Guneratne acknowledge that the NYSC had fallen behind the fast-paced technological world, but they were determined to bridge the gap. With the rising prominence of digital platforms, the council has transitioned traditional activities into the digital realm.

One of the significant digital initiatives introduced by the NYSC is the Yavvana Samaja Sammelanaya, where every village now boasts a Yavvana Society on the digital platform. To enhance efficiency, the NYSC has shifted from printed applications to conducting all recruitments through an online system. Each applicant is provided with an electronic ID, streamlining the application process and increasing accessibility.

Digital competitions

Embracing the digital spirit, the NYSC has expanded its offerings to include competitions on the digital sphere. Alongside the traditional youth sports, cultural festivals, and theatre competitions, digital competitions have been introduced to promote creativity and innovation in line with the modern world.

Recognising the growing importance of vocational training, the NYSC has pioneered vocational programs in collaboration with institutes like VTA (Vocational Training Authority). Moreover, the council has become renowned for its contributions to art and culture. Thurunu Shakthi, the first institute to introduce the Reality Field concept, has nurtured talents and inspired numerous cultural and artistic events.

NYSC Chairman emphasises that the NYSC is eager to collaborate with other youth-led organisations, both public and private, to consolidate their efforts in empowering the youth. This vision aligns with their goal to become the pioneering government institute dedicated to Sri Lanka’s youth.

Mental health and well-being hold utmost significance, especially during challenging times. In light of this, the NYSC has decided to intensify its counselling services. With counselling officers stationed in each district, the council conducts programmes in villages and schools. Recognising the mental strain caused by prolonged technology usage, the NYSC aims to provide the youth with essential support and guidance.

To foster technological expertise among the youth, the NYSC has introduced AI and Robotics technology courses in collaboration with private institutes. Receiving funds and training from the private sector, the council aims to develop a skilled workforce that can navigate the digital landscape effectively.

Agri-entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurship development is another focal point for the NYSC. The council aims to equip the youth in 25 districts with knowledge and resources in areas like digital marketing and business start-ups. Additionally, the NYSC plans to nurture 75 agri-entrepreneurs as part of the 75th independence commemoration.

Chairman Guneratne stressed the importance of aligning their vision with the national policy. The Youth for 2024 initiative aims to guide the young generation toward becoming leaders and driving Sri Lanka towards development and progress. He called upon all youths to unite beyond political affiliations and seize the opportunities provided by NYSC to make the country a developed nation by 2048.

As a tribute to their accomplishments, the NYSC is launching Eda Meda Thura, a programme to honour outstanding figures who have emerged from the council, including artistes, sportsmen, business leaders, and politicians. This initiative aims to celebrate the success stories that inspire the youth and encourage them to realise their potential.

The NYSC, under the dynamic leadership of Chairman Pasindu Guneratne, is spearheading a digital revolution to empower Sri Lanka’s youth for the challenges and opportunities of the modern world. By fostering innovation, providing vocational training, enhancing mental health support, and promoting entrepreneurship, the council envisions a future where today’s youth are the driving force behind a prosperous and developed nation.

As they continue to evolve and embrace the digital age, the NYSC stands as a beacon of hope, encouraging the next generation to rise and become the architects of their own success, contributing to a thriving Sri Lanka on the global stage.අ
