A three-wheeler driver who allegedly tried to abduct a seven-year-old girl who had come to Galle Face with her parents was caught by people there and handed over to the Fort Police on Sunday (23) night.
This girl had come from Moratuwa with her parents and brother to Galle Face on Sunday evening.
The Police said that while the girl was walking and playing around Galle Face with her brother, the three-wheeler driver had grabbed the girl’s hand and pulled her to the side near a set of steps.
The girl’s father seeing this had embraced his daughter and screamed that the three-wheeler driver had tried to kidnap her.
A group of people who were at Galle Face had caught the person and handed him over to the Police.
The 33-year-old suspect, who is a resident of Blair Lomond Estate, Udapussellawa, had told the Police during interrogation that the child was about to fall on the steps when she was climbing down with another child and then he had rushed over and caught her. Apart from that, he had told the Police that he had no necessity to abduct her and that he had only saved the child from falling down the steps.
Investigations have revealed that this suspect had come to Colombo from Udapussellawa and his livelihood was driving a three-wheeler. He had been residing at a boarding house in Boralesgamuwa.
Then he had left that place stating that the rent was too high and had been in the habit of spending the night at Galle Face The Police have discovered that there are various professionals who spend the night in this manner at Galle Face.
A senior Police officer said that the girl’s father has filed a complaint against this individual and that he would have to be produced in court.
