Police have not yet been able to question the suspect who killed the young mother and daughter in Anguruwathota.

Police are gathering scientific evidence against the suspect. He had injured by himself with a pair of scissors yesterday morning (22) when he was arrested by the Police. He is presently receiving treatments in hospital under guard. Police have been unable to question him due to this.

According to the information received by a Sergeant of the Warakagoda Police, a team of officers of the Warakagoda Police attempted to arrest the suspect who was staying in a deserted house in Warakagoda. However when the Police team reached there, the suspect had fled the house. Anguruwathota Police OIC who arrived there with a team of Police officers launched an operation in search of the suspect with the guidance of the Sergeant at the Warakagoda Police.

They succeeded in arresting the suspect who is an army deserter. When going to arrest this suspect, he attacked the Police officers with a piece of scissors in his hand and tried to run away. Police say that the suspect stabbed himself with the tip of the scissors and injured himself.

This double murder happened on July 18. A senior Police officer said that the Police have received several evidences that this person was laughing and talking with the murdered woman at her house from noon till evening.

The officer said that a woman who is living in a house near the victim’s house was used to take the 11-month-old to her home and give her food and drinks and brought her back to the house. When the woman returned home with her daughter on that fateful day, she has seen the victim talking with the suspect at home.

According to the information received by the Police, this suspect has a three-wheeler and he had come to the house by this three-wheeler. The officer said that during the inspection of the security cameras of the houses on the road where the three-wheeler travelled that evening, a clear image of the three-wheeler was captured from the footage of one of the cameras. Officials said that the three-wheeler has been taken into Police custody and it will be forwarded to the Government Analyst for a scientific analysis.

The official said that a scientific investigation will be carried out by the Government Analyst to find out whether there are threads in the cloth that wrapped the body of the three-wheeler or bio-samples of the victims.

On July 18, the woman’s husband lodged a complaint with the Police that the woman and the child were missing noting that the two of them were not there when he came home that day her husband had told Police that the suspect, who is his sister’s husband, was also at home that day and called him in the evening asking what time he would return home.

Since there were blood stains on the door of the refrigerator in the house and several other places, the Police started investigating the disappearance as a crime. Police had interrogated the complainant’s brother-in-law who had come to the house on the July 18 and 19. He had said that he did not know anything about this.

After the arrest of this suspect yesterday, although he did not get a chance to be interrogated, he told Police in the hospital that he had nothing to do with this crime.
