Rising stars of the squash world, Nevindu Lakman and Yusuf Sheik, strike a pose for the lens, showcasing their camaraderie and sportsmanship at the 2023 WSF World Junior Squash Championships.
In a thrilling encounter at the Melbourne Sports Centre yesterday, England’s top-seeded squash player, Yusuf Sheik, secured a decisive victory over Sri Lanka’s rising star, Nevindu Lakman, in the 2023 WSF World Junior Squash Championships.
The match, played on the fourth day of the 12-day tournament, saw Yusuf Sheik dominate right from the outset. Standing tall at six feet and two inches, the English player displayed remarkable control and precision in his shots, leaving the 5 feet and six inch tall Lakman struggling to match his pace and agility in the first set.
Yusuf Sheik showcased his prowess on the court and claimed the initial set with an impressive score of 11-4, setting the tone for the encounter. However, Nevindu Lakman, who had previously fought valiantly in the championship, did not give up easily. The following two sets turned into a fierce battle, with both players engaging in intense rallies and pushing each other to the limits.
In the face of adversity, Nevindu Lakman displayed incredible resilience, fiercely contesting each point. However, the English player’s experience and superior height advantage proved pivotal in the tightly contested second and third sets. The scores read 12-10 and 15-13, both in favor of
Yusuf Sheik, securing him a straight 3-0 sets victory over the spirited Lankan player.
Emotions ran high after the match, with Nevindu Lakman expressing his thoughts on the hard-fought encounter, “It was the toughest match I had to face in this tournament. The English player is so much taller, and he always played with a powerful volley sprinting to the front of the court,” said Lakman.
