Japanese Embassy Minister/Deputy Head of Mission Katsuki Kotaro and officials of the IOM, ILO and Labour and Foreign Employment Ministry, at the Project Closure Event.

The Japanese Embassy’s project to support the socio-economic reintegration of Sri Lankan migrant workers repatriated due to the Covid-19 outbreak, came to a close last week, a news release from the Japanese Embassy said.

This project was funded by the Japanese Embassy and executed by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), in collaboration with International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Labour and Foreign Employment Ministry.

Japanese Embassy Minister/ Deputy Head of Mission Katsuki Kotaro attended the Project Closure Event at the Mövenpick Hotel, Colombo, on July 13.

The project filled a crucial gap by restoring the livelihoods of migrant returnees impacted by Covid-19, through community infrastructure and providing access to employment opportunities, while reducing their vulnerability through enhanced skills development for future employment opportunities. The project also sought to improve the capacity of government institutions in facilitating the consistent economic participation of migrant returnees.

Japan has been continuously supporting the peace and socio-economic development of Sri Lanka and the joint collaboration of IOM, ILO and Sri Lankan Government under this project was conducted in order to ensure targeted beneficiaries a sustainable livelihood through viable income generation activities.

The Government of Japan remains firmly committed to continuous support to assist the people of Sri Lanka and hopes this project will remain another significant milestone honouring the seven decades’ friendship between Japan and Sri Lanka.
