JISA workshop in Kandy in progress.

“For the development of any slow progressing community, the role of the Civil Society Organizations (CSO), which includes NGOs and their network, is vital. To address the rights of the marginalised and poor in Sri Lanka, a strong network among the CSOs is needed,” said PREDO Deputy Executive Director S.K. Chandrasekaram at the valediction of the three-day workshop conducted by the Jesuit Integral Social Action (JISA) recently at the Satyodaya Social Encounter Centre, Kandy.

“The Plantation community commemorates 200 years of their presence in Sri Lanka. Various Organizations and Government institutions are trying to celebrate this particular event but these efforts should not end as a mere celebration. The CSOs should together lead the plantation community as a land-owning community. Their basic problems, such as entitlement to land and housing ownerships, and the issues of the working community should be addressed,” he said.

The three-day workshop was organized by JISA Co-ordinator Fr. Benny S.J, and nearly 25 Social Activists from JRSS-Mannar, CSC-Hatton, Satyodaya-Kandy, and Shanti Centre-Colombo were present.

“Fr. Benny S.J. said that the Jesuit fathers are doing Social Work in different parts of the island. Furthermore, the fathers have brought the grassroots organizations under one umbrella and formed a network-JISA. We will embrace 50 CSOs in the future, and the network will address early childhood development, women empowerment, value education, advocacy, and sustainability development of the rural poor,” he added.

On the last day, six Social Activists who had worked for more than 25 years in Jesuit Social Centres were awarded by JISA. Their service was appreciated and admired, too. All the participants received the certificates for participation.
