Robbers disguised as Cops rob Rs.4 Mn in Halthota

Anguruwatota Police said a gang of seven men who broke into a house in Pethigamuwa,

Halthota in disguise of Police officers carrying swords and sticks, attacked the residents and stole gold and cash worth about Rs.4 million and fled on Saturday (15) night.

Police said that among the robbed property was a 14 3/4 pound gold necklace, a 2 1/2 pound ring, a 3/4 pound gold necklace and a sum of Rs.510,000.

Last Saturday (15) at around 10 pm, they came to the front door of the businessman’s house and had said that they were from the Police, and told the businessman to open the door.

Robbers broke the back door of the house and entered the house and got the couple and their three children to sit on the chairs in the living room of the house.

It has been revealed during Police investigations that when the businessman’s wife asked for their Police ID cards, they had hit them both and their son as well. The robbers then stole the money and gold jewellery from a cupboard and a small table drawer in two rooms of the house and the gold necklace worn by the businessman’s wife, police said.

Realising that the people who came were not from the Police but robbers, the businessman and his son had attacked two robbers and the police said that one of the robbers fell among the flower pots in front of the house. Last June 29, a business house in Millaniya area and on July 1 to a business house in Kahathuduwa area,in a period of 18 days, robbers in disguise of Police came and robbed gold items and money worth Rs.4.5 million.

The suspects have not been arrested by the police yet. It has been revealed in the police investigation that some of the robbers were dressed in uniforms similar to Police sports uniforms, wearing white helmets and black jackets and face masks and came on three motorcycles.

A senior official said that apart from the Anguruwathota Police, several special Police teams have been appointed to arrest the robbers.
