All the Colleges of Education will be converted to universities to train teachers required to the school system. Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha said that in the future, teachers will not be recruited
to Education Colleges for a three-year diploma, but to a university that will be established to produce teachers for a four-year degree.
Accordingly, all the 19 Education Colleges that exist now will be converted into a universities its related faculties that produce teachers in the future. The Minister also said that these universities will be controlled under the Education Ministry with the approval of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
He also said that they are not allowed to form student unions like in other universities and the reason for this is because of the teachers created by these universities.The minister emphasized here that it is a basic requirement to produce a disciplined group of teachers, with a degree from these universities. The minister mentioned this while participating in a programme to educate the principals for the development of education quality in the North-Western province yesterday in Chilaw.
