The Department of Agriculture has introduced new varieties of Elabatu (Solanum insanum) named Tikira and Menike.

The Department says that these two new varieties of Elabatu, which give more yield, also have the quality of the fruits.

The Girandurukotte Seed Research Institute has introduced these two new cultivars.

These two new types of Elabatu have already been distributed among farmers for cultivation.

The Department of Agriculture has developed a number of new products and many tests on these new products have been successful so far. According to the Department of Agriculture, new tests were conducted especially in relation to paddy and other additional crops.

By the end of 2023, Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera had instructed the Department of Agriculture to take steps to introduce new types of crops that can achieve higher yields in the local agriculture sector.
