On the initiative of the Director, Rev. Bro. Dr. Pubudu Rajapaksha, the Welfare Society of St. Benedict’s College, a donation of Rs.5 million was made towards the renovation of St. Lucia’s Cathedral in Kotahena.
The donation was handed over by Bro.Rajapaksha to His Eminence Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith. The Cathedral, which has its origin as a small, thatched but-like chapel in 1779, has been intertwined with St. Benedict’s College since its founding in 1865.
In 1878, when the old church was dismantled and work started on building the new cathedral, as an interim measure St. Benedict’s was converted into a public chapel to serve the Catholics of Kotahena. Since then, the cathedral has served as the chapel for the school.
